A target audience is a crucial part when marketing a product in order to promote it as successfully and strategically as possible. This is why every product needs a set target audience to do with age, gender, occupation and interests. Because the genre of music for my artist is alternative rock, I will need to think of the stereotypes surrounding people who listen to this genre of music. Another word for target audience is demographic as this also focuses on the audiences characteristics.

Age: The age demographic for my band would roughly be 15-22 years of age. This is a stereotypical age for people to like bands with the genre as these ages are stressful times in people's lives. Therefore, by listening to alternative rock, it may help people escape from reality for a while.
Interests: Certain interests of people who listen to alternative rock would be using their phones a lot; especially on social media sites such as Tumblr, Twitter and Instagram. Other stereotypical interests include piercings/tattoos, dying hair, going out partying/to festivals with friends and drinking. Some films that would fit the conventions of the genre are 'School of Rock', 'Step Up', and 'Hot Fuzz'.
Clothing: Some stereotypical clothing that would be worn by people who listen to alternative rock is fishnet tights, ripped jeans, oversized hoodies, band t-shirts, plaid shirts and beanies. Most of these items of clothing are gender-neutral and can be worn by both males and females.
Gender/Ethnicity: In relation to gender, the amount of men and women who listen to the particular genre of music would be about equal. The majority of listeners will stereotypically be white as this genre's lyrics and messages would mostly be aimed at white ethnicities.
Occupation: Due to the age demographic of alternative rock's target audience, listeners would most likely still be in school, college or university. Some may have left education and be working full-time but, the majority will either be unemployed or have a part-time job.

Hobbies: Fans of this particular genre of music may have some hobbies that would surprise the socially "normal" person. These may include skateboarding, painting/drawing, photography, reading and sleeping.
