What Have You Learnt From Your Audience Feedback?

To see the full questionnaire on survey monkey please go to the 'Audience Questionnaire' survey under my planning tasks. Here is a screenshot of the question I used as an example:

To view the YouTube video of my digipak audience feedback please go to the 'Digipak Audience Feedback' page which is situated under ancillary.

Before completing a final production of my music video, I asked 3 people in my school for their opinion and ways to improve upon it and conform to my genre of alternative rock as best that I could.

  1. The first person I asked was a female who was completing a pop music video therefore, the stereotypes for our videos were different. After watching my music video, she stated that she liked the narrative and the ratio of performance to narrative scenes, she also said that she liked the fast-cut editing of the rewinded repeated scenes towards the end as she said it created tension. However, she said that I needed to make some of the scenes brighter in terms of lighting in order for the viewers to be able to see all important details.

  2. The next person I asked was a male photography student therefore, they have good knowledge of cameras and know how scenes need to look clear and smooth. A positive thing he said about my music video was that there were a variety of locations that fit into the storyline however, he also said that the storyline in the narrative wasn't as clear as it could be. This negative comment did not bother me or make me change anything within my final production as it is not vital for music video's narratives to make sense all of the time and certainly is not important for my chosen genre. He also stated that the video quality needed to be improved in order to make it look more professional, taking this on board, I re-exported my video on Adobe Premiere Pro and this then improved the quality slightly. However, the quality of my video did not need to be completely clear due to the fact that this fit in with my genre and the plot of my music video as it implies that the main characters life is unclear and unconventional.

  3. The third and final person I asked was a female in my media class who was doing a music video and has chosen the same genre as me which was extremely helpful because the stereotypes would've been the same and she knew what should go into an alternative rock music video. Things that she liked about my music video was the storyline as she said that it followed the genre as did the mice en scene elements that I used also, she expressed that she liked the quick-cut editing that repeated scenes which played backwards as this built tension. She also liked the transition of the last clip to blackness after it shows the metaphorical depression character smirking after causing the main character to commit suicide. However, she said that it was unfortunate that the transition did not finish and manage to fade to all-black before the video ended. Therefore, I attempted to fix this using Adobe Premiere Pro but, it did not change the end of the video unfortunately.

From receiving this piece of audience feedback on my music video before it was completed, it allowed me to improve my video accordingly and fit in with my target audience even more. I changed the quality of my music video and the lighting of certain scenes as a result of my feedback, this helped my video to be the best that it could be. I did not change any content within my scenes because the storyline doesn't have a requirement to be completely clear due to my genre being alternative rock. Therefore I have left this down to how my audience interpret my music video and it will be interesting to see if they correctly decode the plot within it which uses the reception theory as put forward by Stuart Hall.
